Pinball does seem to see this for what it is: a plot element to get them to go into the woods. Just because it's commented doesn't make it good writing, I know, but sometimes I want to poke fun at myself. Quite frankly, this issue would be quite boring if it didn't get them to go into the woods (and some might say it's still boring).
